Although White River State Park holds many diversions, here are more ideas for the weekend visitor to enjoy:
- The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum has a collection of racecars dating to the very first winner. This year's month-long Indianapolis 500 Festival, May 527, features a parade, mini-marathon, concert and much more.
- Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum opened last year in the lower level of the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Monument Circle. The museum tells the story of the Civil War using the photos, letters or diaries of Indiana residents.
- Shop Circle Centres 100 stores, and then take the kids to the center's arcade.
- Youngsters also will enjoy The Indianapolis Children's Museum, a fun-filled place for exploration and education.
- For a bite to eat, St. Elmos Steakhouse opened in 1902 on Meridian Street and offers hefty beef dinners. Farther south on Meridian is Shirpiros Delicatessen, a favorite place for huge cornbeef and pastrami sandwiches.
