Several U.S. presidents found solace in the South, including Grover Cleveland.
Between his two presidencies, Cleveland vacationed and hunted in Jefferson Island, La., where he visited his Massach-usetts neighbor Joseph Jefferson, an American comedian best known for playing the lead role in Rip Van Winkle.
At Jefferson’s Louisiana hunting lodge, Cleveland would sit beneath a 300-year-old oak tree which still stands in the midst of the Rip Van Winkle Gardens. The gardens, Joseph Jefferson Home and adjacent guest cottages are open to the public.
