After breakfast, you’ll be escorted to the airport for your flight to the Galapagos Islands. Upon arrival on Baltra Island, you’ll be warmly greeted and transferred to your waiting ship, the deluxe MV Galapagos Explorer II. Settle-in to your suite where you’ll find a welcome bottle of wine. Then step ashore with your naturalist guide to visit Dragon Hill, overlooking a beautiful bay on Santa Cruz Island. Learn more about island wildlife and geology at this evening’s onboard briefing with your naturalist guides. Meals B,L,D

Day 3 – Ascend Bartolomé Island / Hike Santiago Island

Bartolomé is famous for its dramatic geological formations, including the much-photographed Pinnacle Rock. This morning, a short hike brings you to the summit for a panoramic view of this Galapagos icon framed by two tranquil inlets. Then walk along a sandy beach where stingrays and white-tipped sharks come close to shore. On Santiago, a mile-long trail will lead you to a scenic coast where fur seals gather. Meals B,L,D

Day 4 - The seas and shores of Fernandina and Isabela Islands

Here at the far western edge of the archipelago, these islands are visited only by faster vessels like the Explorer II. The voyage is well worth the journey. Your excursions today by land and boat reveal unique species like flightless cormorants, Galapagos penguins, and large colonies of marine iguanas. Tonight’s festive dinner celebrates your crossing of the Equator. Meals B,L,D

Day 5 - Birds of North Seymour Island and the Giant Galapagos Tortoise

Join your naturalist guide along the flat trails of North Seymour, home to Blue-footed boobies and the magnificent Frigate Bird. After lunch, step ashore on Santa Cruz where you’ll see evidence of the island’s geological origins on a walk through lava tubes. Then see giant Galapagos tortoises in their native habitat here in the highland wilds of Santa Cruz. Meals B,L,D

The National Park Interpretation Center on San Cristobal offers a nice overview of all that you’ve encountered so far. Cruise along to Cerro Brujo to observe Sally Lightfoot crabs, iguanas and sea lions. Meals B,L,D

Day 7 – Encounter the Wildlife of Española Island

Remote Española Island is the oldest and southernmost in the Galapagos archipelago. Because of its remote location, it offers a number of endemic creatures not seen elsewhere, species that have adapted to the island’s specific environment. Marvel at Blue-footed Boobies, sea lions, elusive lava lizards and the world’s only nesting site of the magnificent Waved Albatross. Meals B,L,D

Day 8 – Discover Santa Cruz and Rabida Islands

Learn about the pioneering research and important conservation work being done on the islands during a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Center. Afterward, your exclusive AAA Experience reveals the pioneering efforts of the Galapagos Ecuador Foundation, a non-profit organization created to address the many challenges presented by rapid population growth in the Galapagos. At the Foundation’s Fabricio Valverde Environmental Park, you’ll see firsthand how education, recycling and community outreach are helping to minimize human impact upon the island’s fragile eco-system and its indigenous species. Then join your naturalist guide on Rabida; with its unusual lava formations, it’s the most geologically diverse of the Galapagos Islands. Meals B,L,D

Day 9 – Explore Bachas Beach / Fly to Quito

Alight on the white sands of Bachas Beach, an important sea turtle nesting site. Keep your eyes peeled also for blue herons and pelicans. Then disembark your ship and fly to Quito where you’ll be escorted back to the luxury JW Marriott for dinner and a tranquil overnight. Meals B,L,D

Preserving the Galapagos

To reduce the impact of people on the fragile Galapagos eco-system, the government of Ecuador is reducing the length of cruises in 2012, along with new ship operating requirements.  Thus, our cruise length reduces to six nights beginning in January, 2012.  The Explorer II is certified ISO 14001, and already exceeds the government’s new guidelines.
