Your Exclusive Itinerary
Day 1 – Welcome to Manaus
Surrounded by miles of Amazon rainforest in every direction, this vibrant and energetic Brazilian city still retains the spirit of a true frontier town. Upon arrival, check in to the Tropical Manaus Hotel.
Day 2 – Your Voyage Begins!
Join your guide after breakfast for a half-day tour which we’ve arranged exclusively for AAA Members to gain deeper insight into this unique city and its remote Amazon setting. Start the morning at the colorful local market and see the Customs House and Amazon Theater, an extravagant opera house commissioned by rubber barons who made their fortunes here at the turn-of-the-century. You’ll observe the bustle and activity of the Manaus Port and admire the stately elegance of the Rio Negro Palace. A special visit to the National Institute of Amazonian Research reveals the pioneering work which has been conducted here for more than half a century. With laudable goals encompassing both scientific knowledge and sustainable rainforest development, your visit here will give you the background and context for a more enriching Amazon cruise.
In the afternoon, you’ll step aboard the 5-star MV Iberostar Grand Amazon. Meet your ship’s officers and crew at the Captain’s Welcome Party as you begin your voyage up the mighty Rio Negro. Meals B,D
Day 3 – Exploring the Amazon
Early risers can head up to the Top Deck for Continental Breakfast as the rising sun casts its first light over the awakening jungle. Later, a full breakfast will be served in the restaurant. Then step off ship with your naturalist guides to explore the flooded forests and creeks of the Manacapuru River region. Return to ship for a late morning lecture on rainforest flora and fauna, a wonderful opportunity to bring insight and perspective to your Amazon exploration. Enjoy a casual buffet at the Tucano Grill on the Top Deck or sit down to lunch in the Kuarup Restaurant.
Late in the afternoon, your guides will lead another thrilling rainforest excursion. Try your hand at Piranha fishing or explore by boat across the calm waters of the Amazon’s many lakes. After dinner tonight, join your guides to spot elusive Alligators lurking in the dark river. Meals B,L,D
Day 4 –Deep into the Amazon
Continue your exploration of this unique eco-system with a second day of naturalist-guided excursions. Depending upon water levels and accessibility of remote forest trails, there will be more opportunities for bird watching, jungle trekking, village visits, photo safaris, speedboat excursions and caiman spotting.
Between your morning and late afternoon excursions, you’ll enjoy lunch onboard, time to relax and an enlightening lecture on the peoples of the Amazon. This evening’s Farewell Dinner is followed by an entertaining show of Brazilian song and culture. Meals B,L,D
Day 5 – Off ship and on to Rio
As your ship charts a course back to Manaus, you’ll cruise the amazing Meeting of the Waters, where the black currents of the Rio Negro join the brown waters of the Amazon and flow together for miles without mixing. Disembark in Manaus and fly to Rio, where you’ll be met and escorted to the 5-star Sofitel Hotel perfectly situated overlooking world-famous Copacabana Beach. Meals B
Day 6 – Cruise through Guanabara Bay
This morning, you’ll sail in the wake of the Portuguese explorers who discovered Guanabara Bay in 1502. Your cruise offers sweeping views of Rio's unique setting on the southern shores of this enormous bay, graced with picturesque islands and ringed by forested slopes. Sit down to lunch at Confeitaria Colombo, one of Rio’s oldest and most popular restaurants. Meals B,L
Day 7 – Rio from City to Summit
Your full day guided exploration begins after breakfast. Towering over Rio is the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer – arms spread, protecting the city below. Travel 2,400 feet by train to the top of Mt. Corcovado to visit this 100-foot tall landmark and enjoy stunning 360˚ views of Rio. Then ascend by cable car from Red Beach to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. At the summit, you’ll have breathtaking views of a magnificent tableau encompassing the city, sea, mountains and sky. Discover the city's famed beaches, from Copacabana to Ipanema, and lunch at the celebrated Oasis Barbecue. Your evening is free to enjoy as you please. Meals B,L
Day 8 – From Rio to Iguassu Falls
You’ll be escorted to the Rio airport for your flight to Iguassu where you’ll be met and transferred to the deluxe Mabu Thermas Resort. Then join your guide for an afternoon of exploration on the Brazilian side of the Falls. Meals B
Day 9 – Mighty Iguassu and Onward…
This morning, your guide will take you to all the best vantage points on the upper and lower sides of the Argentinean Falls including the celebrated Devil's Throat - where the turbulent waters create thousands of rainbows suspended in mid-air. Then feel the refreshing spray and hear the mighty roar of these thundering cascades as you explore the Falls from below by boat – it’s an unforgettable experience! After sightseeing, you’ll be escorted to the airport for your onward flight. Or, discover the sophisticated allure of the Argentine capital with our 3-day program to Buenos Aires. Meals B
