In 1902 when AAA was formed, roads were treacherous, traffic laws were nearly non-existent and cars were unreliable and sometimes unsafe. Dating to those early years, AAA has always worked to make driving safer for motorists through tireless legislative and educational activities, and one of those efforts has been to help prepare new drivers.
Through the years, AAA has developed books, videos, brochures, and more recently, an interactive CD Rom program, to help novice drivers manage driving risks and learn the skills necessary to be safe drivers. Some of those programs include:
How to Drive: This 16 chapter text book for beginning drivers is a comprehensive guide to learning how to operate a vehicle safely. The book examines every aspect of driving, from basic maneuvers to emergency evasive actions. The book also includes tips on developing an effective visual search pattern, driving in adverse conditions, identifying traffic signs and signals, selecting the correct insurance coverage and maintaining vehicle systems. Cost: $16 for AAA members and $18 for nonmembers.
Driver-ZED: Designed for a burgeoning computer generation, this interactive CD-ROM allows teens to learn how to manage traffic risks without risking their safety or their parents’ car. Called driver-ZED for Zero Errors Driving, the multimedia, live-action video challenges users to respond to hazards that drivers routinely encounter. Users are presented with video clips that train them to scan and spot potential driving hazards and respond correctly. More information.
